Who Are We?

Word-Filled & Spirit-Empowered Redeemer Church is a vibrant, non-denominational church family in New Plymouth. We are a reformed evangelicalchurch, holding to the sovereignty of God over all creation and the authority of the Bible as His infallible Word.

We are part of the Newfrontiers and Acts 29 families of churches. This partnership reflects our commitment to church planting and our belief that the local church is God’s primary witness in the world.

We strive to be a people who combine deep theological conviction with a dynamic reliance on the Holy Spirit. Whether you are exploring Christianity or looking for a church home, we invite you to join us as we seek to love God, love one another, and make disciples.

Love God, love one another, and make disciples.

Reformed and Evangelical

We describe ourselves as a reformed evangelical church. Both words are used in different ways, in New Zealand and around the world, so this is what we mean by them, and what we don’t.

Reformed

What we mean

We hold to the teaching recovered in the Protestant Reformation of the 1500s: that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, as revealed in Scripture alone, for the glory of God alone. We believe God is sovereign over all things, our salvation included; this is sometimes called the doctrines of grace.

What we don’t mean

We are not part of the Reformed Churches of New Zealand or any other Reformed denomination. We are an independent, non-denominational church: “Reformed” describes what we believe, not who we belong to. Nor does it mean cold or merely intellectual. We seek to combine deep theological conviction with a dynamic reliance on the Holy Spirit.

Evangelical

What we mean

The word comes from the Greek euangelion, “good news”: the gospel. To be evangelical is to be a gospel people:

  • the Bible is God’s Word and our final authority;
  • the death and resurrection of Jesus is the only way anyone can be made right with God;
  • each person needs to turn from sin and trust in Christ;
  • and this good news is to be lived out and shared.

What we don’t mean

In some countries, especially the United States, “evangelical” has become a political or cultural label. We don’t use it that way. For us it isn’t a party, a voting bloc or a culture: it’s about the gospel.

Our Values

Our Core Values are the guiding principles by which we live and make decisions; what we want to be known for as a church. As set out in clause 2.4 of the Constitution, theseThese Values are derived from our Core Beliefs (Appendix C) and describe the ways in which those beliefs are pursued and practised in the life of our church. The scriptural basis for these convictions is set out in the Core Beliefs. Together, these Values express our vision: to be Word-Filled, Spirit-Empowered, Joyful Worshippers of Jesus Christ. Grace-Based Biblical Truth roots us in God’s Word; Walking in the Spirit keeps us dependent on His presence and power; and Transformational Discipleship and Missional Love are the outworking of joyful worship, as we grow in Christ together and make Him known to others.
