Update No. 436

Good Morning, Redeemer Family

Sermon Recordings

This week, Sean walked us through Hebrews 11:23–31, looking at the incredible faith of Moses' parents, Moses himself, the Israelites, and Rahab to remind us that we are "two-age" people; living in a fallen world, but spiritually seated with Christ. Sean highlighted how true faith often requires us to trust God's promises over our immediate emotions or our desire for control. Just as Moses chose the reproach of God's people over the fleeting pleasures of Egypt, we are called to obey God even when fear, anger, or anxiety tell us to flee or take matters into our own hands. Sean gave us a helpful diagnostic: our feelings are good indicators of what we treasure, but they make terrible dictators. Instead of trying to fix our circumstances in our own strength, we must remember that God brings unimaginable outcomes from impossible situations; just as He did by parting the Red Sea, bringing down the walls of Jericho, and weaving Rahab, a societal outcast, into the very lineage of Jesus. As we face our own trials, Sean reminded us of a powerful truth: obedience often comes before changed feelings, freeing us to step out in faith knowing God holds our future.

If you weren’t able to make it on Sunday or if you’d like to listen to this sermon or any previous sermons, they’re all available here.

Can’t wait until Wednesday to listen to our latest sermon? Good news, you don’t have to! Our sermons are now (generally) uploaded by 8pm every Sunday.

Wednesday In The Word

Our next Wednesday In The Word is on Wednesday, August 12th from 7:15pm at the Rogers (68 Fernleigh Street)! This is open to anyone and everyone (13+), and if you’ve got younger kids that need to come along, they’re welcome to hang out too!

Be sure to reflect on these questions as you read the passage so that you can come prepared to share!

What did you find interesting about this passage? Why?

What questions come to mind when reading this passage?

What do we learn about people from this passage?

What do we learn about God (or Jesus) from this passage?

In light of this passage and what we’ve discussed, how will you practically apply it this week?

Our discussions will be based around Luke 12:22–34, but feel free to engage with the rest of the context reading as well.

Context Reading: Luke 12

Focus Passage: Luke 12:22–34

Tea & Testimony

The next Tea & Testimony will be on Saturday, August 22nd from 7pm at Nicola’s place (17 Waiwera Place, Merrilands)! This is a great opportunity to spend some quality time with one another, hearing about what God has been doing in the lives of the women of the church. Come along and be encouraged!

Monthly Men’s Breakfast

Our next Monthly Men’s Breakfast will be on Saturday, September 5th from 8am - 9.30am at Mike’s place (87 Veale Road).

Voice For Life: Letterbox Drop

As Sean shared with us on Sunday, we at Redeemer are really passionate about standing up for the Biblical view on the sanctity of life. One of the practical ways we do this is by getting behind the work of Voice For Life here in NZ.

Right now, Voice For Life needs some hands to help with a letterbox drop of their latest flyer, which you can see above.

If you’ve got a bit of spare time (or if you’re happy to make some time), we’d love your help getting these out into the community! We’re hoping to find volunteers willing to deliver about 200 flyers each. To keep things easy, you can either tackle a route we assign near the church, or just wander around your own neighborhood; whatever works best for you. There is no set timeframe for these to be delivered, so you are free to deliver them at your leisure.

If you're keen to help, just let me (Fraser) know. You can reply to this email, send me a private WhatsApp message, or just tap me on the shoulder this Sunday.

Once we know how many hands we have on deck, we’ll get the flyers ordered and let you know as soon as they’re ready to deliver.

North Island Biblical Counselling Conference

We would love to encourage our church family to attend the upcoming North Island Biblical Counselling Conference! Hosted by the New Zealand Biblical Counselling Association (NZBCA), this event is a fantastic opportunity to be equipped to faithfully care for one another using the Word of God.

Conference Details

Speaker: Dr. Stuart Scott (Professor of Biblical Counselling at The Master’s University and Director of Member Care with ACBC)

Location: Covenant Presbyterian Church, 77 Rogers Road, Manuwera, Auckland

What to Expect

The weekend is split into two connected themes, focusing on how genuine heart-change naturally leads to better care for our church family.

Pre-Conference: A Christlike Mindset

Friday, 18th September 2026 The pre-conference addresses the central battleground of personal change: pride versus humility. Dr. Scott will expose how pride resists change and how cultivating a humble heart opens the way for genuine transformation.

Main Conference: Christlike Love

Saturday, 19th September 2026 Saturday shifts focus to the "one another" passages of the New Testament. You will learn what it looks like to rely on the sufficiency of Scripture to build up the body of Christ and how biblical counselling is simply a natural extension of normal Christian living.

Want a preview? If you want to get a feel for the teaching before signing up, the NZBCA has recently uploaded the video recordings and session notes from this year's South Island conference to their YouTube Channel.

Reflection

“‘I feel. I feel. I feel.’ That word creates a fuzzy cloud of potent authority around a dozen dubious statements. It's tough to argue with it. We present ourselves—and people in our culture present themselves—in terms of feelings as though these things are beyond authoritative evaluation. They rule our lives. And yet the word of God pierces this word, slices it open, lays it bare. It reveals all thoughts, intentions, feelings, desires, and wants."

- David Powlison
